As the nation begins its celebration of Black History Month, NBC Chicago and the Field Museum turned to K. & H. Montgomery Assistant Professor of History and African American Studies Courtney Joseph for her expert insight.

On February 1, NBC Chicago will air an interview with Joseph on Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable, Chicago’s first non-native settler.

Also on February 1, the Field Museum will host a virtual celebration of DuSable featuring Joseph. “Conversation About Jean Baptiste Point DuSable” is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m.

“I am excited that NBC Chicago and the Field Museum are starting off Black History Month 2022 by discussing Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable and asked me to lend my expertise,” Joseph said. “As a Black man who was the first non-native settler of Chicago and built a thriving life and business with his Indigenous wife, Kittihawa, his story shines a light on the Black and Indigenous roots of the city.”

The Field Museum is a natural history museum in Chicago and is one of the largest such museums in the world.
